A Guy Called Gerald nu e doar “a guy”, este o figura istorica a anilor ‘80, reprezentativa pentru scena acid house din UK, direct din inima Manchesterului, dar si o figura proeminenta pentru contributia adusa scenei dnb. “Fac muzica de dans. Daca nu poti dansa pe ea, nu e muzica de dans. Nu vreau sa spun ca trebuie sa mimezi libertatea sufletului, dar dovedeste-ti grooveul.”

A crescut in biserica, in una penticostala, cu muzica 24 de ore din 24, unde duminica tineau concerte diverse trupe. “Am fost spalat pe creier cu muzica, iar acum sunt dependent de ea”, spune artistul, iar parcursul sau o dovedeste. Mai tarziu s-a inrolat si el intr-o trupa de DJ si MC care cantau hip hop si electro. Doar ce isi punea pe picioare un studio si se intalnea cu ei in fiecare duminica, pentru un jam session. Apoi a urmat State 808 si celebra Pacific State. Influentat insa de soundul Chicago si Detroit, houseul a fost stilul care i-a adus succesul, respectiv piesa Vodoo Ray, respectiv Sony/ Columbia Records.

Si cum labelurile considera ca esti bun numai daca ai vanzari de masa, colaborarea cu ele n-a durat mult. Satul de mainstream, a vrut sa fuga, precum adolescentii rebeli, si s-a refugiat in dnb, fara sa stie ca face dnb – a scos un album care a zdruncinat scena jungle. El spune insa ca a facut-o inconstient, pentru ca la acea vreme nu exista o separatie intre genurile muzicale cand venea vorba de schimbari tehnice intr-o piesa. Dupa care a s-a mutat la New York, isi dorea sa iasa din scena muzicala engleza si sa o poata privi distant, din afara, fara a fi incadrat in vreun stil anume. Si a stat departe vreo 10 ani. “Viata in America a fost ca si cum as fi distins intre padure si copaci”. Si acum, pe contul de soundcloud al artistului, sta drept motto: “cand vine vorba de muzica, refuz sa ma compromit sau sa urmez trenduri. Muzica mea este, pur si simplu, entertainment”. Si ce sa vezi, s-a mutat la Berlin, si a semnat cu labelul !K7.

Iubeste calculatoarele, iti dai seama dupa cum vorbeste despre ele in interviuri, cand explica cat sufera daca unul este “in spital”. Cateodata face doua piese in acelasi timp, fiecare pe un calculator. “Ma trezesc ca fredonez melodii. In 25 de ani nu am avut niciodata un blocaj artistic. Mi-am mai luat un pc ca sa pot compune doua piese in acelasi timp, dar tot nu-mi ajunge”. Mie imi place mult de el pentru ca sampleaza si-si pune arhivele cu sample-uri pe net, pentru ca are o problema cu marile casele de discuri si masinile lor de mancat banii artistilor, pentru ca vede internetul ca victoria undergroundului asupra mainstreamului, si pentru ca incurajeaza cultura globala, bazata pe schimb de informatie, in care toate operele sunt reeditate si remixate, pentru a crea ceva nou. In interviuri marturiseste ca nu mai suporta piesa Vodoo Ray, dar comentariile sale recente de pe pagina de facebook explica de ce:

“Regarding Voodoo Ray, I do appreciate that there are people who have attached memories to this track, but I can’t help feeling that there are some people who are just attached to the success of the track, which for the past 22 years have been totally separate things for me.
My goal is to try and encourage new and old DJ/producers to make new music. A remix or a re-edit or a cover version is not the be all and end all of dance music. In fact, I think there should be 70% creation and 30% regurgitation because I feel we’re drowning in the world of loop. The music is losing its soul. The melody’s gone. I mean, how can you have a melody or any kind of progression with a two bar loop that’s rockin on at about 127 bpms?
Let’s get back to the soul in dance music. I know the fame is important to some but there are others of us that just want to get our groove on. It’s like the emperor’s clothing, going out dancing. It seems like people get more of a groove on, just dropping the names of the most famous DJs.”

Cand face live, setul sau este mentinut de un sampler si un laptop. Iar pentru carcotasii care au de comentat ceva impotriva seturilor cu laptopul, are si pentru ei un mesaj:

“I think they should stop watching and start dancing. It’s supposed to be dance music for crissakes. I think computers are an integral part of dance music and depending on the dj/programmer on the night you can create a real personal interactive environment. The entertainer should be able to interact freely with the audience. In the ideal situation you wouldn’t even know if it’s vinyl, CD or PC, just good grooves. It’s all superstar Paul Oakenfold type DJ shit that turned it into a spectacle. We need to take it underground. Get rid of these bouffant Judge Jules motherfuckers. Oh shit he hasn’t got any hair has he? Forget about the Djs, it’s all about the music and let’s get into it”.
