This is easy to guess just from hearing their music: Kassem Mosse’s tracks have the dusty, rough edged feel of an all-analog set-up, while Mix Mup’s material is consistently raw and clangy, with his own New Wave vocals giving it all a charming whiff of throw-back. Of the all the musical sentiments the two producers share, one of the most potent is their longing for a time (namely, the 90’s) when nightclubs provided an outlet for more challenging, un-danceable electronic music. “I feel there are a couple routes which can be taken when putting together a mixtape for a site like RA: You can rehearse the arrangement which can yield a more relaxed/ listener-friendly mix, or alternatively it can be treated like a gig: Press record, bang it out and go for a raw feeling. I chose the latter approach, because I want people to know what to expect if they come to see me perform. I saw this podcast as an opportunity to (hopefully) promote my live set.
As far as the tracks and mixing style, it is a fairly good representation of how I might play out. I do some EQ moves and fader bumps, but I don’t go too crazy. I try to tastefully play the turntables/mixer as an instrument. Within a two hour set or so, I’m bound to go completely “underwater” at least once or twice. There are moments when you play for the audience and moments when you play for other musicians… I have a gig at Berghain soon, that might call for a darker selection, but I won’t know until I get there and read the crowd. Saptamana trecuta, cand Jijian si-a facut debutul la Martin, am fost acolo sa il vad si am ramas impresionat de cat de bine si fresh a putut sa sune in warm-up pentru Chris Liebing. Este unul dintre singurii dj de la noi cu un sunet undeva intre Dettmann si Undergroud Quality. La Martin, setul a fost mai apropiat de house, ceva mai groovy, dar cu o atitudine la fel de techno. Setul pe care ni-l propune acum vine mai mult din spiritul Berghain. Jijian poarta steagul renasterii techno, iar noi nu putem decat sa ne inrolam fericiti.
Cooptat de Villalobos la Perlon si mutat de ceva ani la Berlin, Shackleton a devenit unul din ultimii eroi minimalisti. Venind din alta zona muzicala (dar apropiat ca atitudine prin cel mai minimalist dubstep) isi permite sa se joace cu regulile soundului berlinez si sa creeze un mutant foarte experimental si fresh.
