What is music? It’s a simple question, but it leads director Christopher Pomerenke in many complicated artistic and scientific directions in his documentary The Heart Is a Drum Machine.
It’s an expansive, inviting film, which embraces everything from Voyager’s Golden Record and aboriginal funeral chants to brain-music therapy and pop music branding. Along the way, Pomerenke’s mostly unassuming movie is enhanced by interviews with artists, scientists and others deeply invested in charting the pathways of the heart, the prenatal vibration that establishes our musical universe, as well as the mind that modifies those vibrations into meaning.

Dr. Orli Peter’s brain-music therapy is equally interesting. Converting EEGs to musical sounds, Peter and others have found that everyone not only makes their own brain music, but that they all possess unique signatures, like fingerprints. And they work fabulously in therapeutic capacities: Music that thumps at 60 beats per minute, roughly a heartbeat a second, tends to enhance cognitive skills, while music with higher BPM rates releases temporary antidepressant effects. Hipdiebattery is the audio recycling product of Anca Stirbacu, visual artist based in Bucharest, Romania. She finished University of Fine Arts Bucharest, her background is video and photography, being involved in projects with HBK Saar, RoArchive, AltArt, Spazi Aperti, Time’s Up, Interface Culture Linz. She is interested in analogue and new media, fashionable technologies, circuit bending, interactive sound installations and she is now working with Pavilion Centre for Contemporary Art and Culture in Bucharest.
Hipdiebattery is the audio support for her visual projects and interactive installations mixing lofi, electronic, noise, trance, witch house, synth pop, balearic, tropicalia, psychedelic, and possibly a hint of manelo-ghetto hip-hop. She is part of Le Cabanon, a collective created in september 2010 with the purpose of promoting young artists within parties in Toulouse, France, from experimental, IDM, minimalist and techno music community. Her first EP, ”Astronomico, Porsupuesto” is now available for free download.

Beat-uri varatice in plina toamna? Cu Chestionabil Joint, totul e posibil! Vorbim desigur de proaspatul duo bostonez Soul Clap format din Charles Levine si Eli Goldstein, doi obsedati de ultimele vibe-uri disco, house si techno dar, asa cum se observa in DJ set-urile lor, si de mai clasicele funk si jazz. Cei doi connaiseur-i ai dancefloor-ului au capatat notorietate odata ce au semnat cu label-ul hip newyorkez Wolf + Lamb (caminul lui Nicolas Jaar si altii) si dupa ce inspiratele lor edit-uri la piese de Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder sau R. Kelly au intrat in set-urile multor DJ-i.
