Efdemin Interview – Part Two

EFDEMIN @ MARTIN / 31 OCTOMBRIE

Exclusive interview for freshgoodminimal.ro

Name your style
Eclectic, deep, shameless, driving.

You put out music like Tobin and Pigon. Why did you gain success with Efdemin?
I can´t explain success. Maybe because of Acid Bells, Just a Track and putting out an Album at the same time Efdemin is better known?!

What is the difference between Pigon and Efdemin?
Pigon is two people (Oliver and me) jamming in the studio and recording that. We are talking a lot about everything and Oliver is having a good influence on the sound design and structure of the tracks. Efdemin is a bit more laid back then Pigon. But sometimes it is very close together.

How did you hook up with Dial Rec?
We all met in Pudel Club, Hamburg, shared the same interests and somehow started putting out records. I wasn´t involved in the label too much until moving to Berlin.

We never receive newsletters from Dial Rec. Don’t you believe in PR work for the label?
We are too lazy – still don´t have an office or somebody taking care of things like PR. But we feel absolutely good with this, as we can´t complain about having not enough attention.

Tell us the story of your new label, Laid. How is it defined? What artists will it sign?
As LAID hasn´t officially started to put out records so I can´t tell you now what it will be – but it is going to be quite deep and housy I guess. There is another subdivision of DIAL which is DEAL. Lawrence put out his unreleased mix for DNTL here, which is very nice.

You are working on a new album. Are you experimenting or working on the ideas you already have about the album?

Well, I havnt´t really started working – as I din´t have a studio for quite a while. First of all I recorded a mix CD which will be out on november 27th on CURLE. Next year I will find some time and concentration to work on a new album – but I don´t have any detailed release plans. So whenever it will be finished it will be out. Maybe next year – maybe later. I don´t feel the need to hurry, as I only want to put out high quality music.

You bought yourself some new hardware. What is it? What do you expect to achieve with it?
I love turning knobs and I do like the hiss, that is suddenly in the recordings while you start working with analog hardware. I realize that the more hardware I have the more I move from working in arrangements to open jams which I record. It is a very different approach, more the way Pigon has always been working. Also I think that all these machines have a pretty nice effect on my work as they are quite limited to something while the computer offers everything at once. I appreciate limitations. 808 rules!

Tell us everything about your project with Nick Hoppner from My My.
BIG SECRET! You shouldn´t know about it!

From all the music you made so far, which is your favorite track?
Hmm – good question. I really like the remix for Andreas Heizenberger (Perfect Moment). Also maybe “stately, yes” from the album. Can´t really say, but the Pigon-stuff I like a lot, especially “Promises” and KAMM (beatstreet) and the tracks we recorded recently, which will be out next year on DIAL.

You want to make a team with Pantha du Prince which is to be called Bucharest. Tell us more about it.
Where the heck…Hmm, that is a very old idea. I forgot about that myself already. I think this should have been something dark and very electronic. EBM or so. We used to do some very experimental sessions and concerts long time ago. We called ourselve DUMA and maybe also Bucharest once – I should search for these recordings once…

Why do you respect Villalobos?
Mr. Villalobos is pushing the borders of this music with nearly every release. That is why I respect him – besides him beeing a fantastic DJ.

Would you like to combine more styles of music than he does? Chilean too?
Why should I use chilenian music in my work? Actually I am a little bored of Spanish voices in minimal house during the last year, so you won´t hear that from me.

How much of the quality of a set of yours depends on the sound system?
If a sound system is really good it means that it represents the full range and isn´t limited to special music. That means that you can go through all the styles of music and it´s specific sound. Sometimes it´s not possible to play old records, because it is limited to sound good with contemporary, heavy compressed and over-excited productions. So if the sound system is good it simply means, that I don´t want to stop!

What would you like the future of techno to be?
Deep but abstract. I wouldn´t like it too be too commercial and chic.

Do you think music can touch you if it is abstract?
I love abstract music – on of my favourite albums is “A Magic Square of 5 to Listen to” by Paul Panhuysen. Check it out!

Why do you like remixes?
Actually I don´t! I finish the last one now for a long time. I am not a good remixer I realize more and more. Don´t know why I do it again and again.

What do you think of the Romanian DJs?
I am a big fan of a:rpi:ar productionwise and what I read in an interview was very symphatic. Never had the chance to hear Raresh – but I guess I would like it.

Your name comes from Romanian character. Your team with Pantha du Prince sounds Romanian too. Do you have a special thing with us?
I am really curious of coming to Romania. I don´t know why, but I want to come to Bucharest for a long time – it is a strong wish with no special reason. Excitement!

Some of us saw you at Sonar this year, some of us at Melt. Compare the two festivals. Which one did you like more and why?
Weather was much better in Barcelona – but they didn´t have the firework fun part. I liked both in a way – Barcelona was very short and intense – and I had some friends on stage. But I couldn´t say which I liked more.

Can you promise Bucharest the same thing that happened in Germany and Spain?
As always – I will do my best and play my favourite music. Looking forward to it very much !!!! THX!

XOXO,

phillip
