icon_attention_s

“[…] with America, hip-hop is hip-hop, and even though the music changes and new sounds and people come into it, the flow remains hip-hop. But in the U.K., as soon as something new comes along, it’s like, “Oh, that’s new music—let’s call it a new name!” when really, it’s all the same thing. We just progress along. [it’s] the kind of thing born out of 20-plus years of genre-waving until everyone just got sick of it. Like, if you had to title every new fashion season something new, and eventually you were just like, “fuck it… let’s just call this season ‘clothes.'” Geeneus for Mutant Funk

Andrew Weatherall

drinking-in-the-griffin

text by Logan

As one of the pioneers in uk dance music, 20 years ago Mr Andrew Weatherall has charted a singular course through its ever changing face, always remaining at the cutting edge, never repeating himself, and never selling out.

I have had the good fortune to witness many great highlights in his career, firstly as a young wide-eyed boy on the dancefloor, to the present day where i am honoured to count him as a friend. There are many well worn tales and interviews just a google away from you, dear readers, but today i’d like to share with you some highlights and maybe some insights that aren’t so well documented elsewhere. So get your dancing shoes, turn up the volume and follow me as we enter the eclectic world of one of the UK’s best musical exports.

Quote. Why do you like the sounds of electronic music?

rhythm_science

“Because you need to. Because there’s a relentless progression from need to act, from gesture to thought, to that mechanic cultural condition. Input, output. The sequence is tight. The loops are relentless. Play your hand, find out what the dealer deals. The rest is the remix. Unpack the meanings, unstuff the fragments and the logic remains the same: the part speaks for the whole, the whole is an extension of the part. It’s a holographic thing.

As George Satayana said so long ago, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”. That’s one scenario. But what happens when the memories filter through the machines we use to process culture and become softwear – a constantly updated, always turbulent terrain more powerful then the machine through witch it runs? Memory, damnation, and repetition: That was then, this is now. We have machines to repeat history for us. And the softwear that runs the machines is the text that flows through conduits like a flaneur of the unconscious.

These are tales told over and over so many time and in so many ways that the texts undergo rigor mortis while they hum with the speed of a thousand and one nights. Murmur to yourself and hear the voices in your head whisper back. That’s the logic. Press “return”. Process. It’s a tale of constant change unto itself. The circuitry of the machines is the emodiment of unthawed. Watch the flow: That’s the content versus context scenario of DJ Culture. Hardware, wetware, shareware, software: The invisible machinery of the codes that filter the sounds is omnivourous”. [Rhythm Science – Paul D Miller]

Tyondai Braxton – Opening Bell

Text in romana aici pentru a sublinia importanta acestui post. S-a subliniat.

Ben Frost – By The Throat

bythethroatweb-498x4982

Bedroom Community / Oct 2009 / try / buy

Slow rage. Drone.

Ben Frost – Híbakúsja

_

“Ben Frost’s stunning performance from Unsound Krakow 2008, in St Katherine’s, a 16th century Gothic church. The recording was made from the audience seating area, rather than via the mixing desk, to capture a sense of the church’s massive interior and acoustics.” Unsound
